    Different Jobs In Horticulture

    Horticulture is a more concentrated form of agriculture involving floriculture (production and marketing of flowers), landscape horticulture (landscape plants), pomology (fruits), olericulture (vegetables) and arboriculture (vines, shrubs and trees). However, these days it is more than just the production, maintenance and marketing of plants. It now involves various tasks of supervising different personnel and use of legal pesticides. It also includes application of different aspects of biology, botany, ecology, chemistry and engineering.

    A horticulturist is the person responsible for increasing the safety of the food, improvement of health benefits from vegetables and fruits as well as ecological development through different landscaping and gardening techniques.

    There are different jobs in horticulture such as the following:

    - Production

    Production is a very important area in the list of jobs in horticulture. As a horticulturist, you can run your own business or supervise a greenhouse, orchard, vegetable farm, fruit farm or nursery.

    - Landscape Design

    Among the different areas of jobs in horticulture, landscaping can be the most challenging. This involves planning the design of plants, trees, shrubs, lawn, ornaments and land cover.

    - Marketing

    It is possible for you to engage in wholesaling or retailing in marketing your plants, seeds, nursery supplies, flowers, fruits and vegetables. You may also become the buyer or distributor of these things for a store or for another organization.

    - Research

    Being a scientist is also included in the list of jobs in horticulture. You can conduct studies on ways of improving the quality and yield of flowers, fruits and vegetables. You can also come up with new methods of managing, preserving and selling different plants.

    - Pest Control

    Pest control is also a very important task that a horticulturist needs to do. Since you specialize in pest control, you can work for large farms, government agencies, agricultural companies and suppliers as an agent.

    - Horticultural Crop Companies

    Being a trained horticulturist, you can also work as a consultant for seed companies, fertilizer manufacturers, pesticide companies, horticultural equipment makers and canning corporations.

    - Inspection

    Government and private agencies may hire you to work as an inspector of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables. This is very important for maintaining good quality and consistency in the industry of production.

    - Publishing and Communications

    Also included in the list of jobs in horticulture is writing for agricultural magazines and newspapers. You can also work in television and radio stations for shows on agriculture.

    The different jobs in horticulture that were discussed above are just some examples of what jobs you can expect from this line profession. This just shows that horticulture is more that just a hobby. It can be a profession or your source of income.
