Horticulture basically deals with design, production, maintenance and marketing of different plants, fruits, vegetables, tress, shrubs and vines. They can include lawn keeping, ground maintenance and tree cutting. Maintenance personnel should also have a good background in pest control, soil chemistry and knowledge in varieties of plants for a lush and healthy lawn. They should also know how to handle different equipment like lawn mowers, tree clippers and pruning sheers. A maintenance expert also has the potential to put up his own business or work for a maintenance company. As a horticulturist, working in a plant nursery or greenhouse are other job options. While working in a greenhouse, you can study and breed flowers that can stand firm against drought or grow different varieties of vegetable sprouts and repot them for marketing. In a nursery you can work as a consultant for plant care as well as retailing. A horticulturist also knows how to handle pests in plants. Therefore, you can work as a specialist in pest control. You can work for regulatory groups, agricultural dealers, processing companies, large farms or pesticides manufacturers. Being a horticulturist is challenging and at the same time very rewarding.
